Psychological Health Clinics for Malaysian Hospitals
Dr Brendan J Gomez, Counseling & Applied Developmental Psychologist
Psychologists for ALLIn setting up the psychology program at HELP University in 1999, Dr Brendan has been successful in helping Malaysians view psychology and psychologists in broader terms.
More Malaysians are leaving behind the notion that psychologists are only for “crazy” people and are requiring holistic health interventions. Hospitals with specialized clinics take lead in a society that is increasingly aware of the health-mental health relationship. |
Expanding Scope of Psychologists in Medical Care in Addressing Wellness & Distress
Today, clinicians are no longer seeing patients for merely physical or physiological symptoms alone, but there is a greater awareness of the interaction of environmental stressors and biological functioning.
While the traditional field of clinical psychology is well-established in people’s minds, more are being exposed to other specializations that aid in treatment and intervention such as developmental psychologists and counseling psychologists. Patients are now able to choose beyond specializations that treat more severe cases (i.e. clinical psychologists), to other specializations that help address emerging health issues in our urban and fast-developing society. |
As a counseling and applied developmental psychologist, Dr Brendan has worked in key settings – medical, prevention (with UNICEF), and corporate workplaces – in attending to life issues that affect cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of adults and teens - areas we are seeing manifest itself in medical problems.
